The Fall of the Church of Scientology and the Decline of California

From that chamber, and from that mansion, I fled aghast. The storm was still abroad in all its wrath as I found myself crossing the old causeway. Suddenly there shot along the path a wild light, and I turned to see whence a gleam so unusual could have issued; for the vast house and its shadows were alone behind me. The radiance was that of the full, setting, and blood-red moon which now shone vividly through that once barely-discernible fissure of which I have before spoken as extending from the roof of the building, in a zig-zag direction, to the base. While I gazed, this fissure rapidly widened –there came a fierce breath of the whirlwind –the entire orb of the satellite burst at once upon my sight –my brain reeled as I saw the mighty walls rushing asunder –there was a long tumultuous shouting sound like the voice of a thousand waters –and the deep and dank tarn at my feet closed sullenly and silently over the fragments of the “HOUSE OF USHER.”

The Fall of the House of Usher

One could say that the decline of California and the fall of the Church of Scientology are if not entwined are parallel in many ways and maybe not so mutually exclusive.

Back in the eighties as many Scientologists did going back to the late sixties we came for the highest levels of Scientology training and processing and eventually ended up settling in the Golden State like many before us who were in search the gold for which this state was named.

It may be hard to believe but then Scientology organizations especially here in Los Angeles were bustling hives of activity. I remember working for the Advanced Organization when the waiting areas were so full they had people waiting for auditing lining the hallways and even the stairwells to the second floor.

That all changed sometime in the early nineties and continues today.

How this happened and why it did is cause for much speculation.

One can say without contradiction that something changed maybe first in the Organization itself and then in the operating environment that surrounded it or it could have been the other way around but then again it could have been a simultaneous occurrence but definitely something occurred.

What happened at least from my own unique perspective will be the subject of upcoming articles.
